Queensland fullback Tamika Upton has received multiple accolades as one of the game’s best players but a vote of confidence by the playing group has fine-tuned her focus.

The 28-year-old will co-captain the Maroons for the first time in the State of Origin series opener on Thursday night at Suncorp Stadium.

She will wear the captain’s armband alongside Brisbane teammate Ali Brigginshaw.

Blues: 1 Abbi Church, 2 Jaime Chapman, 3 Jessica Sergis, 4 Isabelle Kelly, 5 Jayme Fressard, 6 Tiana Penitani, 7 Jess Southwell, 8 Simaima Taufa, 9 Keeley Davis, 10 Ellie Johnston, 11 Kezie Apps, 12 Yasmin Clydsdale, 13 Olivia Kernick, 14 Jocelyn Kelleher, 15 Kennedy Cherrington, 16 Sarah Togatuki, 17 Emma Verran, 18 Shaylee Bent, 19 Kirra Dibb, 20 Olivia Higgins

Kezie Apps knows the privilege of playing for NSW better than most, having pulled on the Sky Blues jersey consistently since 2014.

So relinquishing her co-captaincy duties under new coach John Strange has not dampened her enthusiasm to take it to the Maroons on Thursday night in Brisbane.

Strange has elevated Apps’ 2024 co-captain partner Isabelle Kelly to sole skipper, with five-eighth Tiana Penitani Gray serving as vice-captain.

Apps says giving up the armband will not change how she plays or leads the team, even if it does force her to keep some opinions to herself.
